Certification Overview

Fortinet positions NSE 8 Cybersecurity Expert as a structured way to demonstrate expert-level network security design, configuration, integration, and troubleshooting across complex Fortinet environments. The current learning or assessment scope emphasizes Complex network infrastructure, Advanced networking and VPN, Authentication and PKI, Fortinet Security Fabric, Hands-on configuration, Troubleshooting and design. Candidates are expected to connect Fortinet product knowledge with practical decisions made in real security environments, including configuration, monitoring, analysis, troubleshooting, design, or operational support as appropriate to the level.

The certification is designed for networking and security experts with extensive production experience across multiple Fortinet products. It is relevant to career paths such as Cybersecurity Expert, Network Security Architect, Principal Security Consultant, Fortinet Solutions Architect. Atmic Networks maps it to Expert Level for website filtering and to the roles listed later in this document. The credential can validate a focused skill set or support progression through Fortinet's eight-level NSE program, but it does not replace hands-on product experience.

The official earning route is: Hold active NSE 4 FortiOS; Hold active NSE 5 or NSE 6 in any track; Hold active NSE 7 in the same track as that NSE 5 or NSE 6; Pass the NSE 8 Core Practical Exam; Pass one NSE 8 Elective Practical Exam within one year of the core. Mandatory prerequisites are stated separately from recommended experience: Active NSE 4, active NSE 5 or NSE 6, and active NSE 7 in the same track. Candidates should prepare from the active Fortinet Training Institute course and exam pages, use hands-on labs where appropriate, and verify the selected assessment version before scheduling. Product versions and eligible track exams can change, so the current online blueprint controls.

Proctored NSE 4-7 and industry exams are normally scheduled through Pearson VUE at a test center or through OnVUE where available; NSE 8 practical exams use Fortinet-designated onsite or online delivery. The certification remains active for two years from the date the second required practical exam is passed. Candidates should retain score reports and monitor the Fortinet Training Institute profile for badges, expiration dates, and renewal status. Current program note: The core practical is available, while the new Secure Networking, Application Security, and Security Operations electives are announced for December 2026, January 2027, and March 2027 respectively.

Exam retake and result policy

• Wait 30 days before retaking a failed practical exam; an exam already passed cannot be retaken.
• Fortinet may take up to 30 days to update the training transcript and issue the practical exam result.

Registration, results, and credential tracking

• Use one Fortinet Training Institute account consistently for training, testing, badges, and certification history.
• For Pearson VUE or OnVUE appointments, make sure the legal name matches the identification presented at check-in.
• Fortinet states that the Training Institute account is normally updated with an exam badge within five business days after a passed proctored exam.
• A certification badge is issued only after every required exam and prerequisite certification is active.

The core practical is available, while the new Secure Networking, Application Security, and Security Operations electives are announced for December 2026, January 2027, and March 2027 respectively.

Validity & Recertification

Validity: Two years from the date the second required practical exam is passed

Renewal method: Accumulate 200 activity points while all required prerequisite certifications are active; a temporary NSE 8 recertification exam remains available only to eligible holders until 31 January 2027

Prerequisite rule: Any prerequisite certifications required for renewal must be active when the renewed credential is issued.

Expired certification: If the certification expires, complete the current initial certification requirements again.

Cascading renewal: Qualifying NSE 8 practical activity can renew active NSE 1-7 certifications under Fortinet's points and prerequisite rules.

Recordkeeping: Monitor the Fortinet Training Institute profile and certificate expiration date rather than relying only on reminder emails.
